James Alex Fields Jr, the man who plowed his car into counter protesters in Virginia, is from Union KY

"He was very infatuated with the Nazis, with Adolf Hitler," Derek Weimer, who taught history to Fields at Randall K. Cooper High School in Union, told Scripps Media.

"He also had a huge military history, especially with German military history and World War II. But, he was pretty infatuated with that stuff."

Weimer said Fields was a quiet, respectful student but had some "radical ideas on race."

James Alex Fields Jr. (photo) is now charged with second-degree murder, malicious wounding and failure to stop in an accident that resulted in death. Federal officials also have opened a civil rights investigation.

Field’s mother, Samantha Bloom, told The Associated Press on Saturday night that she knew her son was attending a rally in Virginia but didn’t know it was a white supremacist rally.

She said she'd told her son “to be careful” and to peaceful.

Cincinnati media -- Union is in the metro area -- said Fields bought the Dodge Challenger he used to plow into counter protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia, from a dealership in nearby Florence KY.

The Fields and his mother moved from Union to Toledo, Ohio, just a few months ago.
